| “The world is full of pain and sorrow. But I have found a serenity that you can find too,” said a mysterious Indian sage in northern India two-and-a-half millennia ago. This eloquent, mesmerising documentary from Emmy Award-winner David Grubin introduces viewers to this ‘sage of the Shakyas’ who was destined to become world famous as the Buddha, the Awakened One. Based on the Pali canon, this biography is interwoven with animation and draws upon the paintings and sculptures of a 2000-year-old artistic tradition. The testimony of contemporary Buddhists, including Pulitzer Prize-winning poet WS Merwin and HH the Dalai Lama, provide insight into this ancient tale. In an interview Grubin admitted, “I’m not a Buddhist . . . I am interested in psychology and the Buddha was the first psychologist. The message is that you have the potential to lead a richer and more meaningful life, and the Buddha is your guide and model.” Richard Gere narrates. | |
