Kundun

At Labia on Orange Aug / Sept 2011

KUNDUN

134 minutes; 1998
Blessing Buddhas: Kundun Called ‘a hymn of praise’ to the Dalai Lama, this is a rare film for the legendary director Martin Scorcese to have made. The Tibetans refer to the Dalai Lama as 'Kundun', which means 'The Presence'. The true story of his daring struggle to rule a nation at one of the most challenging times in its history is powerfully told – a sensual and hypnotic meditation on ritual, nature and humanity. This is a majestic spectacle of images and sounds, and the film's initial release created an international uproar. Featuring a striking Oscar-nominated score by renowned composer Philip Glass, this extraordinary motion picture has been greeted with both controversy and worldwide acclaim.
